It seems that a useful feature would be to provide some kind of templating for automatically filling out the graph tree. For example, a basic thing might be to have a tree of "hosts" that is automatically created whenever a device is added. Another useful example would be to automatically group graphs of the same type (eg, temperature, bits-per-second, etc), and the same system type (using the SNMP sysDescription).

Sub-categorization for things like netblock, or reverse-dns [sub-]domain name, would probably be useful too for large networks.

This might best be implemented with a templating system that used regular expression matching against a handful of attribute types (hostname, system SNMP variables and so forth), with a few samples provided for things like hostname and graph name (as above), which allowed for multiple levels of matching and sorting (such that ~hosts could be grouped by ~domain).

I was thinking along this way for ages. Regexp based parsing of all kind of templates, filtering and stuff to auto-create all/some trees each and every day based on the matches found. Way cool, but requires a very tough and streamlined setup (just as our installtion )
A really worked-out concept, better code contributions, would greatly improve the chance to make it part of cacti code.
