is there a quick and pain-free way to do this?
ideally would like to preserve all rrds and device/graph settings...

goal is to replicate my existing cacti setup on a different machine,
located in different geographic region..

pls let me know, so far all I can think of is

backup database,
tarball cacti directory
move both to new machine and extract accordingly..
I'm quite sure I'm missing something here

It is important to note that is the Machines architectures are not the same you will have to dump and import the RRDTool files to the new machine. Also, if the OS is not similar enough, Windows to Linux, FreeBSD to Linux, you will have to dump and import as well.

Also, to prevent data loss, I would suggest you get the database copied over and let the new server start collecting data.

Then dump and import the RRDTool files in batches to the new host. This way you avoid any gaps in your graphs and you make sure your new installation is working.

If you have more question or you need assistance, I have done many moves and maybe I can help you out.

Hi,

I'm not very familiar with how dumping rrd's work.
can someone help me with the steps involved in
copying an existing cacti install (data as well) to a newer server?
both servers (old and new) running same OS and hardware;
I need to replicate the old server to a new geographic location...

pls help, thx

The "streaker" one? Yes, I did not have a closer look. There's no downloadable code in there?

Actually, we're almost ready for distro. My half of it is done, which is the exporting function. N3ncy is still completing the import function. He said he should have something ready to test by next monday barring anything bad happening.

We've been sending code back and forth for the past week or so working out the bugs.

We are doing a test migration tonight.
Source Centos
Destination FreeBSD

Next test will be Linux to Linux
Then FreeBSD to Linux

After that we will add Windows to the mix.

N3ncy brought up an interesting point while we were working on this while he was attempting to import my 900Mb Cacti database. So there's gonna be some major reworking of the Bloom export code.
