Hello,
im a bit confused about the "local linux machine" template,
does this mean it can only graph the host where cacti is running on?

We would like to graph some important machine on our network.
I created a new device with a "remote" local IP and used the "local linux machine" template, it is drawing but it looks very much the same as the localhost graph.

Can you point me to guide how I bhave to configure the snmp daemon and cacti to get this done right?

thx

Yes. "Local" as in "localhost".

Yes, it *is* the same.
I found out more or less the same way you did: when I noticed (by chance) my printers had the *exact same* "brainwaves" as my localhost. I declared that... unlikely.

Moreover, associated graph templates and associated data queries with names starting with "Linux" or "Unix" are often only designed for the localhost in question (the machine running Cacti).
I think the only exception to this is the Ping Latency graph template, which graphs the ping time from your localhost to the device you associate the graph template with.

I think this is what you need: http://docs.cacti.net/node/410
Then, try giving your "remote" machine the "ucd/net SNMP Host" host template or the "Generic SNMP-enabled Host" host template. *If* you have the SNMP daemon working on the machine you want to monitor, you should be able to at least see something useful. Other people here are more qualified than me to help you further on the daemon. Linux is not my specialty, I'd only make a mess.
