I proud to announce that Platform computing is using Cacti!!!

Platform Computing Real Time Monitoring (RTM)

They currently have a solution for Real Time Monitoring of their LSF environments using Cacti and the Plugin Architecture. RTM runs as a plugin to Cacti and is available from Platform Computing.

Hi rony,

Since Cacti is gnu licensed and available free for download. Shouldn't Cacti for Platform LSF be gnu and free for download too? Or there is some deal between Cacit and Platform LSF to make it commercial?

Thanks!

Plugins aren't supplied as part of Cacti, so needn't be subject to it's license restrictions. There are a couple of other semi-commercial plugins (NMID looks like it will be, and there's a java-based realtime graph thingy I can't remember the name of).

Besides, the GPL doesn't say anything about how much it should cost... it's just about not being restricted by the developer. In practice, it makes it free because anyone who pays can then just give it away again.

Hm... didn't know that NMID is semi-commercial ... it's just the NFTracker CGI script which I can't publish, as I created it for my company and it uses ChartDirector as the graphing tool, which does cost money and I can't distribute without buying a special licence ...
The rest ist whatever licence the underlying tool has (e.g. phpIP -> GPL ...)

For the other stuff, Howie is right, just have a look at http://www.phpauction.net/viewfaq.php?id=9 which is GPL but you can't get the source code without paying for it.

Look here for what "free" means: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

Ah sorry - I recall looking at your website and I read that as an implication that there would be a 'product' at some stage... "The Cacti Plugin itself is released under the GPL. The different addons for the network management systems can have other licences."

Yep, those addons are like cgi scripts using some proprietary code (e.g. ChartDirector) or are BSD l, Apache, Eclipsed ... licenced ...

So it's easier to say "The different addons for the network management systems can have other licences." than to list every single licence

phalek,

Cacti I do as my hobby, RTM I wrote for Platform. The web site itself is open sourced just like Cacti, the poller is proprietary. I would like all Platform customers to benefit from the technology. However, I don't make all the decisions.

There are not too many "special" things on the website part of it, although it's my best work to date and the Plugin Architecture has benefited as well. Plugins like Manage make use of some of the more advanced PIA hooks.

Regards,

Larry
