devices which cannot be polled

I'd like to use Cacti to graph statistics on a number of devices which *cannot* be actively polled -- they run 24x7, but are only connected to the network intermittently.

I'd been thinking of writing a script on each system to collect the data I want and FTP (or whatever) it home when the system connects, but I'm not sure how I'd then put that data into Cacti.

E.g. the system might collect data from midnight to noon, dial home at 1pm ... how do I go back in time and insert 12 hours of data?
