| Hi, I would love to see a asset DB type inclusion into CACTI so we can track things like make, model, serial numbers, locations, customers etc etc and have this data available in CACTI? |

| That would be an option for a plugin, but not for the Core of Cacti. |

Is there? I've been looking for something like this for a while. I began writing my own, but the time required is a little more than I can spare at the moment. |

IMHO, this depends on the asset management system of your choice. If you can make it spit out e.g. csv data, it should be quite easy to create some wrapper script to create cacti cli commands to
- create a host
- create graphs
- create tree entries
There have been some sort of "general do it all" scripts that may serve as a base recipe. But surely that won't match your exact asset management requirements

I know that phalek was working on something like this (NMID). What I did was to install open-audit, then use the superlinks plugin to create a tab for it.
Obviously, the data isn't placed into Cacti, but it does allow you to view system information without having to leave Cacti itself. |

I have been kicking around the idea of a plugin called Meta that would allow users to dynamically create a table structure using a UI and then populate information about hosts, and graphs. We could then use it to build dynamic tree's.
What do you guy's thing about something like that?

As opposed to making Static or Quantum trees. |

It's a concept I was introduced to about a decade ago. You create a virtual tree based upon the meta fields. Here is an example.
Say you have three Meta fields. The first is "Site", the second is "Closet" and the third is "Switch". You would then create a "Meta View" that creates a Tree structure with Three levels of Hierarchy.
Each Meta field would have an Icon associated with it. These Icons would be used to build the tree. Today, we don't use any Meta Icon for the tree, but using the Meta icons is common.
When the Meta View is selected, you would first see a tree of Sites. You would then be able to drill down to each Closet on the site, and then Switch. When you are at the switch level, you would then get a view of it's graphs maybe with a dropdown to select template type or a filter dialog to limit what is seen.
This make Tree management automatic. But you can also have almost infinite tree variations.

this is what i'm searching for.
The ability to add additional infomations on existing trees... populate with informations like customer contacts, phone numbers, ....
Have you created something? |
