Hi everyone,

I am new to Cacti (well, just got it installed after weeks of trying). I am running on a Windows 2003 platform.

I would like to start off by setting up simple Pinging to devices on our network to track the status of them and I am blown away with all the addons that are here.

I am struggling to understand how it all works, is there any documentation around that explains how to install an addon (for example on of the ping addons) ? This would need to be in simpleton terms i'm affraid.

Anything would be greatly appreciated so i can start playing with this to see what it does

Thanks in advance.

I just re-visited your post. I misunderstood on first visit, because you're using the term "Add-On". This is related to some code tweaking to extend cacti's capabilities. Examples are Thold, Monitor etc. pp.
There's another "build-in" method to make cacti collect and display data based on templates. It is possible to define templates on your own. When finished, you may Export them, using the Export Templates function on the nav bar at the lower left side. Usually, the resulting XML file is posted to the forums. Anyone using at least the same or newer cacti version is able to import from this XML file. This will produce all the Graph|Data|Host Templates, Data Input Method and/or Data Query Definitions and the like. To Import, please download the XML to any place and goto Import Templates. Locate the downloaded file and Save
But as soon as self-made scripts (to gather data) come into account, you'll not only need the XML files but those scripts as well. The scripts usually go into <path_cacti>/scripts.
That should be enough for starting (yes, there are more options with Data Queries).

Thank you kindly for your reply.

I was actually talking about Add-ons as i have tried to install Thold thinking this could do what i was after (i found an install.bat file to install the application which did seem to work, just couldn't figure out what to do from there, lol).

Anyhow, i will take a look at the templates instead as this seems like a much easier place to start as i am such a newbie

If you do also know of any noddy guides then please if you could post up links i will take a look, the more the better.

Kind Regards

Usually, writing the "guides" is left to the publishers of Add-Ons or Templates. The Templates stuff is kinda straightforward, as long as only importing Templates is needed (the "guide" is given in my previous post). Add-Ons usually require more stuff, but each one has its own procedure. So please ask the corresponding Add-On developers (these Add-Ons are NOT part of cacti code). Usually, there are lots of posts related to that in the Add-Ons Forum
