Hi TheWitness,

we have a lot of servers with vmware. The switchports are configured as vlan trunks. Mactrack does not include these ports into the db. Is it possible to include this ports?
Switch-Switch links should be recognized via the base-MAC of the switch and the MAC seen on the port of the neighbour switch. By the way, if I could see the interswitch links I could search for switch MACs 8good for trouble shooting)

Can I ask a stupid question? Why the trunk ports?

Thanks,

There is no stupid question - only the answers - I hope this is not one

Trunks: To get MACs into the db to track servers with VLAN-interfaces; if the server OS support it you have a new MAC on every virtual interface of the VMware. So I can locate the port on a switch if there is a problem with this MAC.
The other point is that I can use mactrack to find a server on a switchdomain (if I use the port description with the servname).
These point are now not available because trunks ports (dot1q-Trunks) are not in the db.

So, then what is the difference from this trunk and large uplinks where you can have literlally hundred's of Mac's. This must be answered first. I've gone down that route for Voice VLANS and was successful, but not with this trunking scenario.

you are right.
is it possible to recognize the os-type or MAC of the other end of the trunk?
At an inter-switch-link both side have the same MACs (or am I wrong?). So if the port is a switchport I must find the MACs from this switch on an other switch. If I could not find it it must be a serverport.

This is an interesting feature request. I have added it to the list, but I am concerned that it will fall into the old, if you catch a requirement in definitiion it takes you a dollar to implement. The same requirement caught in construction costs $10k.
