I see there's an entry for this on the roadmap, and little hints of related-looking things in a few threads around here. I'm curious as to the status of this in development, and what exactly it's being designed to accomplish / what features it will have and how flexible it will be to customization.
What I'd really like out of this, is a way to integrate a windows-based poller into a linux-based cacti install. This would make grabbing WMI data into a linux cacti install really easy, and would then allow monitoring of windows servers without having to touch any of them (just setup a single windows poller) - no wrappers or anything to install and maintain on every windows box.
I've been pondering how to best create a web service hosted under IIS that would be called every poll_interval by the master poller, and given (in xml) a list of WMI counters, servers to poll, etc. and would return a single large XML with all of the data for that interval, to be processed by RRD back on the linux box. But I don't understand cacti nearly well enough to start on such a modification, and I don't know enough PHP to write the linux side of the poller either.
If whatever is on the roadmap/in development could work in a similar scenario to that, I'd be willing to help on the windows side - .NET programming I can handle.
I think it'd be great if WMI was as well-supported in cacti as SNMP even if it requires a windows-only poller for the WMI data. And since I don't see WMI support coming to linux any time soon, I think this is the best way to accomplish it. |

| With the design that is currently in 0.9.0, windows pollers for linux installations will not be an issue and the other way will work as well. |

I am also very interested in the distributed polling feature. Last time I heard of it was December 2004 - and it seems that it was planned for cacti 8.7 sometime in 2005. Any chance to see this feature in the near future?
Merry Christmas!
