I'm just doing verification work on that very version. And I will have to scan current bug list ...
All features that we want to provide are in.
In case you want to test, please use current SVN branch 0.8.9

Yep, that's intended.
We will deprecate a lot of function calls. This version is in compat mode, printing warnings about them. Plugin authors are encouraged to use the new functions instead. As a user, you may safely ignore those warnings.
