Boost 2.0 Released

#1 Post by TheWitness » Wed Dec 03, 2008 11:15 am

All,

At long last, Boost 2.0 has made it from concept to reality. This boost release corrects a number of bug's that have plagued Boost since version 1.5.

This Plugin is compatible with Cacti 0.8.7+ as it is a PIA 2.x Plugin now. Therefore, it is installed just like all other PIA 2.x plugins. If you used old versions of boost, the modification to include/global.php can be removed after install.

Here is the ChangeLog for this release:
--- 2.0 ---
bug: remove the base start time, it complicates things
bug: make version, force, and debug options consistent
bug: rrdupdates oftentimes caused gaps in graphs due to limit issues
feature: add an rrdtool output logging option
feature: support inittab for restarting the boost server
feature: support process locking control methodology

--- Known Issues ---
- If running the boost server, on RRDtool logging is not functional
Please post your findings here relative to testing. The new inittab process should assist you if you are using the boost_server.php. I have personally deployed this at a site with over 54GBytes of RRD's and the I/O wait has gone to flat 0. The major updates only take place once every 4 hours and could be extended further. This is all while using MyISAM, so it's fault tolerant.

Regards,

TheWitness

Not working..

#2 Post by ocon » Wed Dec 03, 2008 12:22 pm

Hi there...

I cant see boost settings; I had boost 1.7 working fine; but now that I updaded I cant see the boost settings tab; I think it has something to do with README step two, that says that we have to add boost plugin to cacti's config.php as I have it under global.php:

$plugins = array();
$plugins[] = 'settings';
$plugins[] = 'boost';

Is that my problem? if it is so, could you please advise on exactly what to add to the config.php.

Regards,
Carlos Diaz

You need to goto Plugin Management, install and enable boost.

This may have something to do with you having the entry in global.php, or more than likely permissions.

Hi Larry!

I just tested your new version of Boost on one of my two development boxes (Windows XP) without having big issues.
Only a small, a little .... a tiny issue appears on a fresh Cacti load if you view at "Boost Status" without saving Boost's settings before:
The default value of "boost_rrd_update_max_runtime" should be 1200 instead of 600 on line 1444 of setup.php.

Great work(!) and best regards
-Andreas- :wink:

Nice thing about this version if the poller exceeds that run time, it will only issue a warning. So, no harm done. I will change the default for the next point release.

Boost 2.0 is working great, nicely done! Already moved into my production environment. Dropped poller time from 55 secs to <10 (except for the hourly RRD update <grin>).

Sorry, I updated the settings directly and did not think about the consequences. :roll:

I did all the configuration, but boost is not under plugin management.
I have to ask the question...did you look under the Uninstalled tab on that screen by any chance? I got so used to the "old" plug-in ways that I keep forgetting to look under that tab too! :oops:

Can't see boost

#14 Post by sthiffea » Fri Dec 05, 2008 4:44 pm

I had the same issue as ocon.
Couln't see boost settings.
The permissions on the folder and files that came within the .tar.gz are wrong.

Make the directory 755
and make the files inside 644

For me, it showed up after that.

Great work btw.
