I am going to likely revamp the whole ping architecture in 0.8.6k. It's a design that we tabled in hopes that 0.9 would have been released some time ago. But due to delay, I will be releasing it. Until then, we will issue a patch for this change.

I'm late on the bandwagon.. but having had the same problem.. I can confirm the replacement ping.php worked a treat!
