hello,
I have tried to upgrade 2 server 2 times to cacti-1.1.38 from 1.1.28.
To no avail - The problem lies with the .38 version creates graphs with 1 to 1.5 min gaps.
On juniper mx80 routers it always creates graphs with gaps, and even 1.1.28 only with the
jumiper routers also has gaps in graphs.

I reverted both servers back to version 1.1.28 - and graphs are being created nomally, except
for the Juniper mx80 devices - on the Juniper devices only -we get many many snmp timeout errors

We are using spine (ver.28) and rrdtool 1.5.5 on one sever, and rrdtool 1.7.0 on the other.

Permissons and folders are correct per cacti documentation - the only difference is we use
symbolic links to point the cacti web files: /var/www/cacti-1.1.28 and the link is cacti->/var/www/cacti-1.1.28
The paths are correct, etc.
I run spine at 30sec, and cron at 5 minutes for the poller.

I am baffeled as to why graphs are ok on .28 (except for juniper) and full of gaps on .38
any suggestions?

When you upgrade, how are you upgrading? Is Boost being enabled? Do you have multiple pollers?

On the timeouts, I had a similar issue which I pinned down to the SNMPv3 Engine ID's on my devices.

snmpwalk -v3 -l authPriv -u <snmp user> -a SHA -A "<redacted key>" -x AES -X "<redacted key>" <hostname> snmpEngineID

The above snmpwalk will query the engine ID, if these return the same values for your juniper devices you are going to have a LOT of issues but it is an issue with hos SNMPv3 is configured, not Cacti.

Assuming this is your issue (Again no guarantee here, it probably isn't your issue).

Which thread??

In response to Cacti Guru questions:
I was not using boost in .28 or .38. Also only using one poller,
BUT, the "backup server" is polling the same devices with its poller.
So that may be "two pollers" I will turn of the poller on the backup server,
and see what happens on the production server - as we do get some
gaps on various devices.

I will update what I find here. Both server are running the same version of net-snmp

Thanks again for the replies.

Check the settings table for *boost* and post the results here
Code:
select * from settings where name like '%boost%'

Hello,
Bad news on the boost query:
mysql> select * from settings where name like '%boost%';
Empty set (0.00 sec)

How would I enable boost on 1.1.28?
I checked a variety of devices and their graphs - We have several Juniper MX-80 routers,
and they are the devices that create graphs with gaps, BUT not all of them!
We are running snmp version 2c -
We also get lots of warnings on these devices - I am trying to figure out why that might be.

Thanks for the replies on this - I realize this may well be reachin for the stars.
I have 418 devices, some are cisco routers, cisco switches, cisco ASAs, and then the Juniper routers.
Most of the cisco equipment produces graphs without gaps, etc.

Thanks again,

eholz1

If I recall correctly, between 1.1.28 and 1.1.38, there were some fixes to the SNMP v3 code to do with the different authPriv etc. If possible, can you try using SNMP v2 to see if that cures the issue?

Hello and Thanks for the replies (as always).
I am using snmp v2 - this is the same for our devices.

We have given up - for the moment - on trying to upgrade from
ver 1.1.28 to 1.1.38 -the main reason is that we gets gaps in many of the
device graphs - the gap is alway 1 minute in width..

An aside - I plan to do a new post on this issue:
We have two hosts, on different networks, but are routed so as to be
able to ping each other, etc. Each of these severs are monitoring the same device(s), using
their localhost poller. (no remote poller, etc).
for a given interface, one server creates a graph without gaps, and the other server creates gaps for the same device, and
the same interface!

I have used rrdtool info to examine each rrd file - one has data values for rra[xx] and the other has areas in the rrdtool info with no datavaleus and some with datavaluies - and the rrd files are not updated at the same time - or in some cases, rrds not updated

Both of these severs are running snmp v2c and cacti-1.1.28.
One server is supposed to be a backup of the main server.

Does it make any sense to have the poller running on the backup server?
thanks,
eholz1

Generally no. You may be getting gaps if you are overloading the device or network with queries, but I don't get the feeling that's what you are doing. Another reason is that your disk is not keeping up with the workload so is slowing down your polling times.

I would expect both sides to be the same. Unfortunately, from an abstract point of view, then it's tricky to suggest what is going on. When trying to diagnose the issues, it's always best to start from the one device or graph that's giving the issue and turn on debug for that item. Then see what the logs report (you should probably do that on both sides to compare what you are seeing).
