Hello All,
I thought I had figured the rrd/poller/data/graph problem out.
Wrong.
I have two servers, both running cacti-1.1.28, with spine.
One server is running the poller as root (root crontab -e)
and the other is running poller from /etc/cron.d as "cacti".
both at 5 minutes.

The server with poller running from root's crontab can write and update the rrds, but the owner stays as "cacti", and files contain data.
The server running poller as cacti - timestamps some rrd files, but there is no data in the file, hence no graph.
It timestamps every 5 min.
Spine runs every 30sec

The servers are on two different networks, but are routed such that either server can access the
devices (switches, routers, junipers, asa, etx)

What really puzzles me is the server running the poller as root, updates the rrds, and the files maintain cacti as owner.
On the other server, I tried switching the poller to run as root, but it created rrds as the root user in the rra directory.

Any ideas on what permissions to check or set? log dir and rra dir are owned by cacti on both servers.

Thanks,
eholz1

When you run commands from /etc/cron.d/cacti it specifies the user on the cron entry to run as. As with most linux processes, ownership of a file should not change unless it is being recreated from scratch. If different versions of RRDTool are being run, it's possible that it was upgrading the files thus recreating them and when not run as root it didn't have the right privileges to do so.

Hello Mr. Guru,

Thanks for the info. I do understand about the /etc/cron.d/cacti - and how the user remains the same,
even it root is running in the cron. BUT, now you point out that if the file is created from scratch,
then it will have the user who created it. So if running poller as "root" root is owner, etc.

Thanks for the reminder on this.
