[SOLVED]snmp xml queries - data

#1 Post by eholz1 » Fri Dec 14, 2018 11:22 am

Hello All,

I would like to create a custom snmp data query to
return just one value (more later).
I have a graph/data source created for a device (with 428 snmp index count)
for just one of its interfaces. This updates rrd file with no data, hence blank graph.

I can do an snmpwalk or snmpget for the device with the oid representing the data I
want to graph, and those commands return the bits/bytes transferred.

The base problem is that when cacti poller runs, no data is retreived for this specific interface.
Data and graphs are created for other interfaces. There is a total of 41 graphs for this device.
It is a Cisco Catalyst 4500.

I would like a custom xml query for just one oid, and then I would match it to a graph temlate,
and then attach the query to the device.

I have reviewed the cacti docs on creating such queries, but have failed to understand how
to get this query to work. Also there is no snmp table involved with this (that I can find).

Any tips on how to do this?

1) Use spine
2) Manually run spine using this syntax

./spine -V 3 -S -R -f yourhostid -l yourhostid

3) See if you are really getting data
4) If not, check the poller cahce for real entries.
5) If so, check file permissions
Before history, there was a paradise, now dust.

Hello Cacit Expert,

Thanks for the tip here - actually handy to run on
any device to see what's the haps.

I have an issue with the system now (cacti-1-1.38),
I have a junipter mx80, and it uses the interfaces.xml cacti data query.
Initially when the device was added, and I added the interfaces.xml
it returned data, 123 rows, 1200 interfaces.
Graphs are created for it (not 1200!). The snmp query times out periodically.
This happens on all our Juniper MX-80s.

If I delete the interfaces.xml query from the device, and re-add it later, the query loads
but returns no rows and no interfaces. This happens on all there devices.

If I perform the same action on a basic cisco switch or router - the query succeeds and returns appropriate items and rows.
I am trying to understand why the Junipers have snmp timeout warnings in the log.

Any ideas?

It will likely be down to what data is returned/not returned by the Junipers and whether you are having any network connectivity issues to those devices. You should also try walking the OIDs being queried manually to see what data you get back.
