Upgrading cacti - same directory name?

#1 Post by lcano » Fri May 21, 2010 4:00 am

I've been reading the upgrading documentation. In the upgrading procedure, we are supposed to rename the new cacti directory to match the old one. Here is my doubt:

May I use a different directory name with the new version?

Why? Sounds stupid, but my old cacti directory is ../cacti-0.8.7e and it seems logical not to rename v0.8.7f with this name, isn't it?

I didn't try yet, but I don't want to do it and break something...

I do the following:

1) place rras and log in seperate location

2) Place cacti087e in a location that the web server can access and setup symlinks to rra and log

3) do the same for 087f

4) To upgrade, symlink cacti to the 087f directory

5) you have to move plugins of course and any xml's and scripts too

I'll try that.

First part (symbolyc links for rra and logs) is already done from the begining. It helps a lot when upgrading and also to keep space disk under control

Thanks. I was thinking in upgrading next week, but I saw that I must wait for spine-v0.8.7f before upgrading cacti.

My mistake.

It seems that what we have to wait for is the release of PIA, not SPINE. It's what I understood reading the post above.

Yes, you can continue to use older versions of spine w/o issue. However, there will be more nice features in 0.8.7f of spine. One of which requires a custom patch, but no problem for the brave.

Ok thanks a lot - Have an upgrade appointment next week, don't want to reschedule it. :)
