Hello All,

Do the red numbers mean anything in the datasource info mode?
I do get graphs, etc.
see this image:

SOLVED - dig into rrd file creation, and use rrdtool in info mode, etc
and the post below re: an upgrade from an old version

The red means that that particular RRA table has an issue. Look at the RRD Tune section for more information.

Yes, what it says is that Cacti would not have created the indees that way. If you use the Data source Debug mode, it shows you how it would have created the RRA. This is likely due to you upgrading from a pre 1.x system.

Hello Again,

Thanks for follow up. Very interesting. I have discovered real rrd/rra problems
when we upgraded from cacti-1.1.28 to cacti-1.1.38. And the cacti-1.1.28 was upgraded
from cacti-0.8 something. So I am sure the database, and the rrd files are all
at risk more or less.

I have also discovered there is an important link between the spine/poller setting (currently set to 30 sec),
and the cron setting for running poller.php, AND the Preset(s) aka rrd file structure. I have yet to find
the magic formula with these to create graphs without gaps, etc!

I do have a basic question, how can spine run every 30 seconds when cron runs every 5?
Is there a mechanism in the poller.php file that knows to start spine, and then it runs every 30
seconds?

Are there any understandable sources for creating custom rrd profile presets that are CURRENT?

Thanks Again,
eholz1

Because what happens is this...

  1. Cron starts the poller process
  2. The poller process starts the CMD.PHP or spine processor
  3. The processor checks the settings table for the Cron/Polling intervals.
  4. Polls the devices/sources needed (determined by the data profiles) and if things take too long as in the polling interval is reached, the processor exits with warnings
  5. Until the cron interval is reached, loops back to to point 2 when a polling interval is passed
  6. Cron interval is reached, poller exits and things start from point 1 again

Hello NetiV,

thanks for this information, it is very helpful
I can see the entire process is pretty involved.

Thanks Again for the excellent and helpful reply.
