We proudly announce the 4th European Cacti Community Conference, aka 4.CCC.eu. Again, it will be held in Essen, Germany at the Linuxhotel, the dates to be decided by you !!!

We have set up a DOODLE questionnaire for you to select the most convenient weekend. This is how it works:
  • Follow the link to our questionnaire at http://www.doodle.com/q9rnec6kkucn8ugh
  • Select your preferred day or days and click on the individual boxes when you could participate
  • In the "Your name" box fill in your community nickname or email address
You can add a comment for our conference agenda or any other matter (optional)

The weekend we choose will be the result of the highest number of clicks.
We will then inform you of the final choice and invite you to send us a formal confirmation of your attendance to mailto:[email protected]

You may want to arrive on Friday after 5 pm. Accommodation is offered at very reasonable prices by Linux Hotel.

Again, we hope that participants from all over Europe will attend. Last time our guests came from UK, Belgium, Denmark and Germany.

This invitation is targeted at all who
  • know Cacti
  • support the principles of the open source software development
  • use Cacti in private or commercial context
  • are interested in using Cacti and want to deepen their knowledge
  • are developing software and want to extend Cacti

Goals of the 4th Conference are:
  • casual discussion between attendees
  • to learn about projects of other attendees and to discuss them
  • to deepen experience related to any relevant topics
  • to meet with at least one or more developers and discuss current goals and the roadmap
  • to support social networking

It is NOT a goal to
  • use the results of the conference commercially
  • publish or disclose confidential information about attendees
  • found a commercial organization

Organization: Frizz, gandalf and BrownieBraun

Kind regards
and hoping for good attendance.
Frizz

Important notice:
We have to change our billing system to avoid tax-related issues. This means we have to separate the Linuxhotel costs (accommodation, breakfast, conference rooms) strictly from our Community costs (lunch buffet, evening barbecue).
For those of you who need a receipt for expenses, only the hotel can issue one.
Since the Community is not a legal entity, we regret that we cannot issue receipts.

Dear Cacti Community,

We will end our questionnaire on Saturday the
12 July 2009.

Here is the first draft timeline for the 4.CCC.eu.
It will be filled up with topics within the next weeks by your points of interest.
It is nearly the same as that which proved of value during the last CCC.eu
So please manifest your expectations and preferred topics for the talks.
There are no restrictions regarding the subject matter.

Friday
    18:00 - 22:00 Arrivals and check in
(Foreign participants can be picked up at Weeze/Düsseldorf/Cologne/Dortmund airport)
Saturday
    9:00 - 9:30 Breakfast
    10:00 - 12:30 1st Workgroup talk
    12:30 - 13:00 Buffet lunch
    13:30 - 18:00 2nd Workgroup talk
18:00 - 20:00 Telephone conference (open discussion) via Skype with all interested parties.
    20:00 - 24:00 Socialising and private activities, lunch inside/outside
Sauna, VII, get-together by the fireplace etc ... ...
Sunday
    9:00 - 9:30 Breakfast
    9:30 - 10:00 Accommodation check out, billing
    10:00 - 13:00 3rd Workgroup talk
    13:15 - 14:00 Buffet lunch
    14:00 - 15:00 Review and outlook to the 5.CCC.eu
    16:00 Closing remarks and farewell.

We will now open our booking mailbox to receive the registration to the conference
The booking address is [email protected]

We offer various arrangements for all personal requirements.
And as announced by Gandalf, we have to change our billing system to avoid tax-related issues.
There is no longer a package offer for several different combinations of accommodation and conference participation.

We will have 3 different options which can be combined to give any of the former package offers.

Billing through the Linuxhotel (receipt available)

    1. Accommodation with breakfast in a shared double room
per day and participant € 20.00

    2. One day participation in the conference, all drinks, facilities and room cleaning
per day and participant € 10.00

Billing through the Conference community (no receipt)

    3. Buffet and barbecue for Saturday & Sunday
    per person € 25.00

In practical terms this means:
Participation in the complete conference (arrival on Friday)
2 x accommodation + 2 x conference + 1 buffet = € 85.00
or arrival on Saturday morning € 65.00
or without accommodation € 45.00

There is accommodation available in double bedrooms for 22 persons.
We would like to point out that the reasonable prices are possible
only because the Linuxhotel allows us to undertake the entire organisation of the conference
and is only grant to participants of Open Source communities.
For a partner not taking part in the conference
you can reserve regular accommodation (with breakfast) for an additional € 55.00

We can use the entire technical facilities of the hotel:
Linux Laptops for personal usage during the conference, WLAN access,
beamer and printing etc. are also available

With best regards
Gerald (aka Frizz)

Thanks for the minutes, gandalf! (and Mr Keller :-) )

Just so I can avoid spending time on dead ends in the next 6 months, is Q4 2009 still the planned release for 0.88? (that's what the roadmap says)

Hi,

thanks for the minutes. Some points:
- our management also wants a huge mount of availibility figures, numbers, graphs
- need of summary of some special data sources from different hosts
- speed up of polling and parallel plugin run

Please be more verbose.[/quote] We discussed it as you will have noticed. But we did not come up with a general approach that could make it into code.
Quote:

What is missing from e.g. reportit or aggregate? We discussed the "TOP10" approach but even this has to be qualified (which objects, which timespan, which algorith to compute TOP10 - average - max - min - last - ...)
Quote:

Not that we feel no need to do so, but what are you aiming at
- polling in distributed locations
- spreading polling load between several servers of same location
- HA
- dedicating servers to different tasks, e.g. polling, database, presentation
Reinhard

From a Service Provider point of view, it also requires some way to associate devices (and individual interfaces/DS) with a customer. Typically the reporting would be for a customer, so it should only include their data! Some notion of 'groups' for devices would be a start, but individual interfaces may be part of a different group as well (the switch is the SP's, but the port is for Customer A). Having to update that in several reports would be painful, so it should be a Cacti feature really.

Does the concept of a "Site" help? It is introduced in 088/main trunk already. It does tackle a different topic but may be "misused" as a grouping option.

grouping:
- creating a customer site and linking graphs or hosts to this site will be a good idea.

availibility:
- tables which presents the availibility per host per month (now you must reset the polling counters and make some extra scripts to get this figures)
- customizing of this table: selectable graphs, ds, hosts grouping per customer-site
- exportable per email, sftp or pdf

summary:
report/summary of only those graphs at which a threshold is rised in a spec. time periode. The management wants only know and see the graphs which shows a bottleneck in the network. If the threshold of XXX is reached I want to get additional graphs, csv-data (CPU, memory traffic) from this host to make a better overview of this event. Mostly this is done on a monthly base.

speed-up:
- polling not only at a fixed 5min-time e.g. 09:00, 09:05 , 09:10 etc. better would be a per-host-polling every 5 minutes distributed over a 5 min-periode: host1-10 are polled 09:00 09:05 etc, hosts 20-40 polled 09:01, 09:06 and so on. this would lower the network load and open session on the firewall.
Now Cacti produces a high load exactly every 5 minutes for 1 minute polling and the next 4 minutes no cpu cycles are used. (consider the 300 sec limit)
- some plugins could be run parallel to the polling of hosts: syslog, config-mgr etc.

What about a country group meeting? (over the CCC.eu)
This could be good for people who can not do a long trip.
This could be organized in a site area like Announcemet/meeting "year" and a submenù with country.
This is useful for creating local groups more organized and where you can also discuss in the native language........something like linux groups.

What do you think about that?

Regards
Alessio

I do not dare to do so. You may know, why. Not that I know the schedule will fail. Just to avoid flame.
