Hi,

I have few Cacti virtual machines, deployed in ESXi 6.5 hosts. Monitor plugin is installed and working, however, I don't hear any alarm sounds when I test by shutting down one of the monitored machines.
There must be a trick to enable the sound somehow in the VM to be played via the GUI. I'm just not sure how ! I went and edited the Cacti VM settings in vSphere, adding a sound card, then rebooted the VM. That did not do the trick.

Any ideas please ?

Thanks

To clarify, are you saying that you have the cacti website open on a web browser ...
  • ... when connected to the VM?
    • What technology are you using to connect to the VM?
    • VNC?
    • RDP?
    • vmWare Remote Console?
  • ... from a client PC?

What OS are you browsing the site from?

What I have found in my normal day to day in the past (its been a while since I tested it though) is that a VM in VMWare will not play sounds unless the host esxi box actually has a Physical sound card in it, even if you add a virtual sound card to the VM.

Even if you have added the 'HD audio' component in the Virtual Machine Properties it won't play audio locally:

My Dell PowerEdge 2950 does not have integrated audio and before I went to a bare metal Hypervisor, I couldn't get audio to play on that server with either Windows Server 2008 R2 nor Virtual Box running on top of that. My radio server is running in a Windows 7 virtual desktop and I stream all day long using Shoutcast (a WinAmp invention). When I am in the remote desktop session though, I do not get any audio as Cigamit has said.
