A few things on mmap:

1) Not all file systems are created equal. On some file systems mmap does not work well.
2) If your file system runs out of space while writing an rrdfile it becomes kind of silently corrupted. RRDtool will likely segfault when it attempts to write to mmap space that it does not own.

So, mmap is great, but there are some downsides.
Before history, there was a paradise, now dust.
