RRDtool 1.2.26: dramatic boost performance in Linux 2.6

#1 Post by fmangeant » Tue Nov 20, 2007 3:20 am

Hi all

RRDtool 1.2.24, 1.2.25 and 1.2.26 were released these days.

There are a few bug fixes, and this improvement :
New Features

* integrated fadvise patchs by Dave Plonka to dramatically boost
performance in Linux 2.6 setups (at least) with many rrd files.
http://www.usenix.org/event/lisa07/tech/plonka.html
I'm currently testing it with Cacti 0.8.7a on a CentOS 5.0

Let me know if you want the RPM files.

However, it will be a good cantidate for boost image caching. I have to get version 1.8 released (big bug in 1.6/1.7).

Yesterday my Cacti server #2 moved from VMware ESX 2 (with internal disk) to ESX 3 (using SAN), and my polling cycle went horribly slow, with a lot of I/O wait :

I then upgraded RRDtool 1.2.23 to 1.2.26, and :o

1.2.26 disables read-ahead caching when using newer linux kernels. That will reduce disk activity to a great extend
